Every year, my office deals with people who are having difficulty with provincial government programs and we discover that part of the problem is that they have not filed their income tax returns.
The Province uses the Canada Revenue Agency statement of Net Income to calculate eligibility for Medical Service Plan Premium Assistance and Pharmacare deductibles. Other programs such as Student Loan repayments also refer to income tax statements.
We recommend that, regardless of how big or small their income is, people file income tax returns on time by 30 April every year so as to avoid difficulties.
