The Vancity Office of Community Engagement presents:

The Right to Food: Moving from Charity to Justice

Talk by Paul Taylor, the Executive Director of the DTES Neighbourhood House

As a child, Paul had first hand experience with the effects of material poverty and the impacts of poverty on families. He credits his experience with providing him with urgency around the need for greater socio-economic and food justice and his criticism of charity, which have become significant parts of his personal mandate.

Talk followed by a moderated audience discussion.

Paul Taylor is the Executive Director of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House and has previously served as the Executive Director of Second Base Youth Shelter in Toronto, Ontario. Paul has taught at both the secondary and post-secondary levels, while also having had served on the board of directors for the largest food bank network in North America, the Daily Bread Food Bank.

Paul is a member of the BC Raise the Rates coalition, which is a group that is concerned with the level off poverty and homelessness in British Columbia. He sees increasing the amount of money that people receive on social assistance as one of the ways in which the materially poor can make more of their own food choices. and participate in stimulating the local economies that support low-income individuals and families.
